Brake warning light: what it means

Red · check before driving

The red brake light (a circle with ! inside, or the word BRAKE) means something is wrong with your brakes, or simply that the handbrake is still on. Because it's your brakes, it's never one to ignore.

Is it safe to drive?

Check before you drive. If the light comes on while you're driving, slow down carefully and pull over somewhere safe. If the handbrake is fully off and the light stays on, don't drive until it's checked. If the brake pedal feels soft, spongy or goes close to the floor, don't drive and call us.

Quick checks you can do

  1. Make sure the handbrake (or electric park brake) is fully released.
  2. Check the brake fluid reservoir under the bonnet. It should be between MIN and MAX.
  3. Press the brake pedal. It should feel firm, not soft or spongy.

Common causes

  • Handbrake on or not fully released
  • Low brake fluid, often from worn brake pads or a leak
  • Brake fluid leak from a line, hose or caliper
  • Faulty brake fluid level sensor or handbrake switch
  • Brake system fault (often shown together with the ABS light)

How we fix it

We check the fluid level, pads, rotors, lines and calipers to find the cause, and give you an exact price before starting. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, so if it's old we'll let you know.

Brake fluid flush: from $149 + GST.

Common questions

Why is my brake light on when the handbrake is off?

Most often the brake fluid is low, which usually means worn pads or a leak. It can also be a faulty sensor. Either way, it needs checking before you drive.

Can I just top up the brake fluid?

Topping up may turn the light off, but low fluid is usually a sign of worn pads or a leak. Get the brakes checked rather than just topping up.

Will it affect my WoF?

Yes. Under NZTA inspection rules, a brake or ABS warning light that shows a fault is a reason for a WoF fail, and so is brake fluid below the minimum mark. We can check and fix it before your WoF.

Light on? We can check it for you.
